The RA Safety stream explores practical solutions to address the road toll, with a particular focus on regional and road worker safety.

We do this by:

  • highlighting opportunities for continuous improvement in land transport safety outcomes;
  • providing best practice guidance on eliminating road injury and trauma;
  • developing strategies and priorities to improve road worker safety, including harmonisation of safe working guidelines; and
  • supporting improved autonomous vehicle safety features and vehicle safety standards.

Our safety policy activites and events are underpinned by our ongoing support for workplace diversity and inclusion.

Key actions for 2020/21

  • Collaborate on policy solutions to standardise and enhance road safety data.
  • Host Spotlight on Safety, our annual safety symposium.
  • Support and promote community-based intiatives, including Rural Road Safety Week and National Road Safety Week.
  • Continue to facilitate Road Worker Safety Working Group projects to drive better outcomes in road worker safety.
  • Host a regional road infrastructure webinar, aimed at focussing attention on 'low cost, high return' road safety treatments on rural roads.

Recent activities

  • RA's Road Worker Safety Working Group met to identify priorities and actions to embed road worker safety in the procurement process and to bolster national pre-qualification standards.
  • RA supported a national call by the Australian Automobile Association to take the lessons from government responses to COVID-19 and apply them to reducing Australia’s road toll.
