About RA Policy

As the peak body for roads within an integrated transport system, Roads Australia brings industry, government and communities together to debate and develop practical policy solutions.

Our broad membership base provides opportunities for all voices to be heard and all angles covered.

Our policy focus extends across five activity streams, with diversity and inclusion an underlying commitment across all five.

  • Capacity is focussed on ways to build long-term industry capacity and capability, as well as the efficiency of project procurement and delivery.
  • Journey Reliability looks at the transport experience through the eyes of the customer, and how we can make journeys more efficient, seamless and responsive across different modes.
  • Safety explore practical solutions to address the road toll, with a particular focus on regional and road worker safety.
  • Sustainability is focussed on solutions and measures to reduce the environmental footprint of our transport infrastructure, improve its resilience to climate change, and increase its use of recycled materials.
  • Transport Reform brings industry and government together to better understand the opportunities and challenges around new transport technologies and modes, and how we price these to ensure fairness and equity for all users.

Each stream is chaired by an RA Board member, who also sits on the overarching Policy and Strategy Committee chaired by the President. This Committee drives the policy agenda, with significant input from transport agency heads and industry leaders.

The policy structure, together with our policy goals and the steps required to achieve them, is set out in our Strategic Plan, a rolling three-year document approved by the Board each year.

Get involved

Our policy streams are at the frontline of efforts to contribute to sound transport policy development in Australia. We encourage members to get involved and register for upcoming policy events to contribute to the debate. Opportunities to get directly involved include:

  • Working Groups. Each policy stream is supported by a wider working group that acts as a peer review panel, as well as contributing to policy deliverables and events.
  • Our annual, two-day Transport Summit brings together over 300 leaders from Australia and overseas to discuss policy issues and share knowledge.
  • Held in conjunction with the Transport Summit, our annual CEO Workshop gathers Tier One industry CEO’s and transport agency heads to discuss specific priorities and actions across each Policy Stream for the next 12 months.  Download the 2019 CEO Workshop report.
  • Forums are held regularly across Australia to inform and engage our members and stakeholders on specific national issues and key state projects.
  • Each year RA leads a delegation of senior government and transport industry officials on an international study visit to stay abreast of transport policy and technologies.
  • Generally hosted in members' offices, out regular policy workshops provide opportunities to actively contribute as policy evolves, and to network with other participants.
  • Webinars allow participants to engage in key policy discussions from anywhere in Australia.
  • Featuring interviews with experts in their fields, our Road Work podcasts drill deeper into the issues. Listen to the latest podcast episode.
